iPhone 3G
The iPhone 2 software is excellent. Apple are still having problems with the switch over to MobileMe (stupid name, Apple!). What should have taken 6 hours has now been going on for 24 hours and still not complete. You would think that they would have sorted out some of the problems before they started. The app store is looking good. I imagine that I will spend a few pounds there over the coming months. At the moment only a couple of apps have that must have sheen to them and they are both less that £4. I'm off to get a new phone this morning. For me it is all about the speed and the extra £60 for the upgrade seems worth it. Mrs McMuffin on the other hand is probably going to kill me. Initially I did think I would get the 16Gb phone but it just isn't big enough so I am going to stick with the smaller one. £220 seems a lot of money over the year for an extra 8Gb.

I had been going to skip off to buy one today - when the Steve said $199 for 8GB, I circled the date on the calendar... until AT&T announced that existing customers who are not "upgrade eligible" are welcome to pay $417 ($399 plus an $18 "change fee") for the privilege. I don't want it that badly.
On the other hand, we did return to the Mac fold last weekend when the wife's PC died on Sunday morning and I had a basic iMac on her desk and running mid-afternoon. I've had enough of keeping PCs healthy.

That does seem expensive, although isn't that what the first phone cost? For what it's worth, it's a lovely bit of technology. I had just got to the stage with the last phone where I wasn't bothered by superficial scratches and had stopped using a case. I had to go out and buy a screen protector and case today. I couldn't bear to have the thing get marked!

I believe that you're right, the first version cost about US$400 also. I didn't buy one for a variety of reasons - mostly my inability to work the virtual keyboard and the EDGE data speeds. I have a 3G card for my work laptop and I couldn't quite bring myself to sign up for something slower than that.
In any case, as the local Mac nut at the office pointed out, odds are that AT&T will drop the prices in a few months anyway.

By the time I had found a shop with 16Gb iphones in, O2's billing servers had crashed, so they couldn't do upgrades. Gutted! I had to go to work then, so left it.
You can buy a 16Gb iphone on the £35 contract for £159 - and sell your old iphone for £200 on ebay, and make a profit!
There are some lovely apps - phonesaber is one of my favourite. It uses the motion sensor in the phone to make appropriate light saber noises :)

I found Phonesaber too. It's great, although I am a little worried about waving my phone about too much...you know, just in case.
