a half dozen ladybirds please
Got back from college tonight to be greeted by Babycake asking me to go to the corner shop with him to buy a Ladybird. I tried to explain to him that you couldn't buy them but in the end I took him down the shop. You can't imagine anything cuter than watching Babycake ask the shopkeeper for a Ladybird. Unfortunately they didn't have any. Babycake seemed to accept this bad news in good cheer.

For what it's worth, some friends of ours send their son to a local Waldorf school, and part of their annual peace, love, and lentils open house is a sale of ladybirds as a means of keeping the aphids under control in your garden.
This spring my older daughter wanted to keep said ladybirds in some sort of stately pleasure dome that her mother found at the alternative toy shop, but refused to believe that they had to be released at some point. The ladybirds proceeded to shag until dropping dead - whether or not this was hastened by their exertions, I cannot say.

Those are very accommodating Ladybirds. Do they have little name tags so that people can return them to your garden when they wander?
