we went out again

This was a dismal and damp bank holiday weekend, but I've thoroughly enjoyed spending so much daytime with Mr McMuffin and Babycake. Ms Ginger Cake had offered to babysit today, so Mr McMuffin and I have been really excited about going to see a film all weekend. We settled on 28 Weeks Later and had a wonderful time eating ice cream and looking at all the gore and views of London (although how the two kids got to Wembley so quickly on foot is quite beyond me).

Babycake continues to delight and alarm with his exponential growth and learning. He is chatty and sounds as if he speaks fluent Arabic, Mandarin and even French on occasion. He is into climbing everything and for about 25 seconds today, Mr McMuffin and I were chatting and took our eyes off the boy. I was alerted to the silence and ran to investigate. Babycake was not staring at the washing machine and pressing all the buttons as I had thought, but had got out into the garden (through two open stairgates and an unlocked door, so much for safety) and was climbing from the bench onto the table. As I ran to him, he slipped and fell, banging his head on the way down. Fortunately his pride was more hurt than his head and he recovered in a minute or so, but I still feel sick at how quickly he got out and into trouble. I know there's so much more of this to come, but I don't know if I can take the worry. This really is horror. How on earth do other people do it?

You spend much of the first year worrying about crib death and then the 2nd and 3rd worrying that they'll just up and kill themselves. As the mom of a 21 and 16 year old, I promise, cross my heart, the worry never goes away. ever.
