internetting
I found this through Gizmodo. It's a video of a 1993 news report on the internet. I just can't believe that the internet has been with us for so little time. It seems to have been a part of my life forever. I can well remember the excitement I felt when I connected for the first time and had a conversation with an old man in Canada. I was fortunate to be a late comer and never had to suffer 28k connections. No, I had a new fangled 56k modem, which chirped and bleeped as it made it's way down the information superhighway, as Clive James used to say. Nowadays it is all so much part of my life that recently I couldn't agree to change ISP back to BT because they told me that I would be without a connection for a week. Deep down inside I know there is something wrong with that, but who cares. I love the internet.

28k ??? You kids have it all too easy. Some of us had it hard, 14.4 and pages that took minutes to load. The height of "titillation" was The Butt Page, which covered all manner of things that hospitals had removed from the darkest of places. I think it is still out there somewhere. Also, the Klingon Language Institute was a very early established web site.

I was a "telenetter" back in the early days of BBS. I used it primarily for research related duties and had to reserve a time to gain access....much like old men reserve tee-time at the local golf course. Users then were constantly reminded of how expensive this service was and how we were not to use it friviously. I still remember my old "pine" email address. Maybe I should check it now and then...

Bloody hell, I started out with a 9600 modem and remember the delight that I felt when I got a 14400! But oh how I moan when my 4mbit connection "seems a bit slow" these days!
