that's that then...
It's taken me the best part of a week to sort out the mess that I made of my computer. Fortunately, I only lost the database that I had made of all our DVDs. I'll have to do that again. I have finally put into action all my ideas about backing up. I created the perfect hard-drive setup, with an up-to-date installation of OSX and all the apps that I usually like to have around. I created a disk image which I have stored on my iPod and spanned across four DVDs. All my documents, photos, music etc are stored on an external hard-drive, all of which is fully copied over to another external hard-drive every day at 4am. That's that then. Hopefully, this marks the end of all the heartache of losing stuff, although that hasn't happened for a while. It's really has been a bit hard getting my head around the idea that most of my important stuff only exists in digital form.
I'm curious about how you manage to ensure that you don't lose the stuff that is important to you.

I back up the most important stuff to an external hard drive and things irreplaceable get burned to a CD....giving me three copies. I only came to this after some highly tragic disk failures.

I don't make that much use of digital-only media as such... so aside from periodically backing up pictures from the digital camera, and perhaps 100 songs bought from the iTunes store, everything else is available on whatever music or picture CD it arrived on. I suppose I should back up more dramatically, but I am spoiled by all the automatic storage solutions at work.

Blind hope. I keep meaning to back up on CDs, but it's one of those things I don't get round to. Hopefull I will before it's too late.

Your backup will work fine till you have fire ora burglary... I do the copy-to-multiple- disks thing and also I've made DVD images and taken them to work - off site backup!

BTW, Sandy is away for two weeks but she's left me in charge of making all the stupid typos, as you can see from the previous comment.
