« something's happening here | Main | another day of waiting »

what it is ain't exactly clear

Apologies, I couldn't resist slightly altering the title of yesterday's post to fit in with today's (although not enough to make it completely accurate), but I'm hoping there's no need for a man with a gun tomorrow. Last night was a little tiring as I kept being woken up by strange stirrings and crampy like nastiness (nothing to do with Mr McMuffin!), but it's all slowed down again now and practically stopped.

In an attempt to distract myself from the events taking place in my very own body I have become an expert in sublimating my anxieties into cleaning the house and washing everything in it. Mr McMuffin has been very tolerant of this activity, but drew the line when I wondered aloud whether it would be offensive to tell people to wash their hands before they touch the Bairn. I have to say that I wouldn't touch a newborn without washing my hands as their immune systems are so immature, particularly someone else's, but that just might be the Howard Hughes in me.

So today will be another day of waiting, but I'm staying in the house and will try to rest up and not notice what needs scrubbing again, and try not to chase up another load of washing.

good luck and hang in there. make sure you're very well hydrated through the days of wait... you'll be up peeing all night, but it helps your body stay at the top of its game.

Have you spoken to the bump directly, asking the bairn to come out?

My mum's waters broke (while she was carrying me) when she was sitting on the steps leading up to the stocks at a nearby castle, eating an ice-cream.

What I'm suggesting is that now's the time to be doing something interesting in some exciting place, so that you can tell the bairn where you were and what you were doing when your waters broke. What about going bungy-jumping, for instance?

David's comment reminds me of the oddest advice I was given....carry a jar of pickles around with you so that if you're water breaks in a public place, you can just throw down the jar and pretend that's the source of the puddle. But please, watch out for broken glass.

Good luck!

I mean...your...not you're...don't want to send my bad spelling vibe to the babe.

(I was nine days early, by the way - it wasn't a case of my mum being reckless.)

Thanks, people!

Christine: I have drunk gallons today, just in case.

Karan: Fabulous advice you were given, but it does beg the question, why pickles?

David: I am inspired to just make up a good story for the Bairn, saves me the bother of actually having to leave the house.

This may be the American antiseptic mania speaking, but I think it's completely legitimate to ask people to wash their hands before picking up a newborn, especially in cold and flu season.

Most people we know did it without being asked, but neither of us were shy about prompting it...

not sure why my post doubled, but I guess it's just extra support and mojo comin' at you.

Hmmmm...heard around the blogosphere you were going to have a baby, then saw a comment of yours at Karan's blog; now I just have to say that I hope the bairn is born tomorrow. My son was born on January 19th, so I'm just a little biased.

All the best!

I have no idea why pickles and not I dunno...perrier. Although I didn't notice any particular odor associated with the amniotic fluids, perhaps they do need masking to some folks...and pickle juice will fill that order for sure.

you really would be tempting fate - who'd want to give birth to a gherkin?
