thankfully
These children lived. However, despite Social Services never having been told about these children, I bet they still get blamed in the public imagination and no Health or Education workers get disciplined. I suppose we'll just have to see.

Stories like this result in my losing my happy liberal reformist side and channeling my grandfather: "Hanging's too good for them!" -- although you would lose the full effect in person, since I didn't start out in Kippen, take up smoking, and then work in Glasgow for 30 years.
And in addition to the Health and Education workers, what about the neighbours? I know that establishing some kind of informal child-welfare Stasi is a recipe for disaster, but surely someone must have noticed something was amiss?

Good point, Colin. I wonder about the grandparents, aunts and uncles too. I'll bet they all thought 'someone' should do 'something', just not them. I have to say I've come across this attitude so many times, usually estranged (usually by choice) fathers moaning about how concerned they are about their kids and when I tell them their rights and responsibilitiies as a father, I get told it's my job, not theirs to sort their kids lives out! Gr, hang 'em all.
