aerial
It probably will not come as any surprise to our regular reader to find that I am a big Kate Bush fan. Kate has a new album out. It's called Aerial. It's her first album in 500 million years. I've been listening to it all afternoon. Initially, I was a bit underwhelmed by it all. I really do like the dramatic stuff. Her voice still sounds fantastic, and gradually over the course of the afternoon, the songs have burrowed their way into my head. I could never imagine that Kate would ever release a bad album, but it is a relief to find that her new album is grower. Ah well, and the good news is that we only have to wait 12 years for the next one.

I'v egot it too but haven't really got beyond the single track "King of the mountain" which I love, and which was the sole reason I got it. I'll listen to the rest next week. I saw the video on mtv (or similar) and I was struck by how old Kate looks. I imagined her as eternally youthful.

This album really is twaddle. There's maybe 3 passable songs on it (the first, the last and one other whose name escapes me). The song that is basically the digits in the number Pi and the song about your socks & jeans tumbling about in the washing machine (maybe the album is named after Aeriel washing powder?) defy belief. The birdsong in almost every other tune make me think Kate is living in cloud cuckoo land. And what's Rolf harris doing in there?
Aerial - 2/10

Oh Steve, the album can be a little bit odd, but that's all part of it's attraction. It may not be one of her best but there is no doubt that it is ambitious and follows in a fine tradition of Kate Bush albums. There are some lovely tunes on it and it grows on you with further listening. I'd be more generous, partly because she is a real talent and one that should be encouraged, I'd give it 7/10.
As for Rolf, he has appeared on another album that she made, although I can't remember which one.
By the way, it took me ages before I realised that all she sang on Pi was numbers. I am sure there is a small joke in there somewhere. She could sing the telephone book, that sort of thing.
Kate is a bit like Neil Young, equally talented in her own unique way, although, unfortunately, considerable less prolific. They plow their own furrow, and that is to be celebrated, I think.
