am puzzled

But I can't be bothered to do the research. I'm just wondering if peas are fruits or vegetables. I know tomatoes are fruits because they develop from flowers, but is it the same for peas? Why do I care, even?

Peas are veggies...icky smushy vegetables. Sweet peas are flowers, snow peas are edible pea pods and pee is the yellow stuff that issues forth in the am.

Hee hee - do Americans not go to the toilet in the afternoon, Karan? ;-)

Peas, my dearies are only mushie if you over cook them OR if you like mushy peas (of the British type, which i do). Fresh garden peas cooked properly should pop in your mouth. yum! And they should never, ever, ever be eaten out of a can (except for the above aforementioned mushy peas).

Peas, peppers, cucumbers and corn kernels are all fruits.

OK...I bow to Jo's expertise...except for peas popping...peas are the yucky green slop that stuck quite well to the underside of my dinner plate, giving the appearance of a well eaten dinner.

Much as I liked Karen's explanation, Jo's has the ring of truth and I bow to her culinary expertise.

Peas are a fruit, the fruit of a legumous plant plant (ie one which forms its seeds in a pod)
