is this a waste of time?
I've just spent the last three hours compiling a list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks Ever. This month's edition of Q Magazine is running a feature and I thought I would try to compile the complete list. We already had 62 of the tracks. I bought some off those Russian sites and downloaded a few from those wonderful free sites. I have now completed the entire list. I just love the internet. The idea that I can find practically any music I want and download it is amazing. I could never have imagined this in my wildest dreams when I was a kid. Anyway, the list is pretty good, but I can already see a few glaring omissions. No Hey Johnny Park by the Foo Fighters and no Inside by Stiltskin. Got any ideas what else should be on the list? Here's the list in PDF.

No smoke on the water...the holy trinity of rock?

No Rush?

Apparently Smoke on the water is included, but no Rush. What essential rock riff were you thinking of?

Well, for a start, the one on Bastille Day was so catchy that a whole country took it to heart, adopting it as their national anthem and creating a whole history of revolution and experimental democracy to go with it! (They're still working on the democracy, bless.)
Just about every song, really. My personal favourite is somewhere on side 2 of Caress of Steel, where it goes da da, da da da da, da da, da da, da da da da... For some reason it reminds me of watching the original series of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. I'm not sure that that will help you identify it, though.
I suppose Spirit of Radio's quite well known and it's got a very recognisable guitar bit, but perhaps that doesn't count as a riff?
Oh, I give up! I just think that Rush should appear on every list of that type quite simply because they're 'ace'!

I have no problem with Rush being included. They used to be my favourite band, and I still have a soft spot for them. David, you would probably like their last album of cover versions. Very good.
As for Smoke on the water, it is on the list.
I'm listening to the new Queens of The Stone Age album as I type, and there are a couple of tracks on it which could be on the list too.

Re Rush cover album: I appear to have a copy in my iTunes and on my iPod mini, and it is indeed rather marvellous. Some kind soul help me discover it last summer!

'Creep' my arse - where the hell's 'Just' by Radiohead? Christ! It's so good, I'm going to listen to it now.

I love 'Just' but the faltering crunch introduction of the big guitar on 'Creep' does it for me everytime. I know, let's have two Radiohead tracks on the list.
