pages

PagesiconApple have just released a new app called Pages, which is part of their new iWork 05 package. It's difficult to describe what it does easily, but it's a desktop publishing, multi-media presentations, page layout, word processing kind of thing. Fully integrated with the iLife suite of apps, it offers 40 lovely looking templates that can be easily customised to create a huge variety of documents limited only by your imagination. Personally, I wasn't that interested in the templates, all I wanted was an Apple branded word processor and Pages provides me with exactly what I was looking for. A stylish interface offers an amazing array of formating tools as powerful as anything in Word. Although, it is important to note that this isn't meant to be a serious alternative to Word because Pages doesn't include the usual pro editing and collaboration tools found in that programme. That said, this is a simple to use, deceptively powerful, word processor for the rest of us. A very fine app indeed.

There is one problem though. Despite Apple's claims that Pages is able to export to a wide range of industry standard formats, and the export options do look impressive, the sad fact is that it just doesn't work. I am always amazed by our willingness to accept software that doesn't work, and that the developers don't seem to realise that it doesn't work until after they have released the software onto an unsuspecting public only too willing to hand over their money to them. I just can't believe that Apple spent all that money and time on developing Pages, and not once did anyone try to export a document into Word or HTML. The exporting process is straightforward enough, but when it came to opening the document in Word, it was a different story. Word struggled bravely, first of all telling me that the document was corrupted in some way, it then tried to recover the document for me, but eventually gave up the ghost and crashed. The same thing happened each time I tried to open an exported template. To be fair, text documents, those that did not include the fancy Apple template formating and pictures worked just fine. Similar difficulties arose when I tried to export into HTML. For some reason, the formating got lost. I'm sure Apple will fix these problems, but why couldn't they have done that before releasing the app.

Another minor irritant is the poor quality of the app icon. It sits in my dock, an indistinct muddy blue blob. It's hard to tell what it is supposed to be.

Having said all that this is another great app from Apple and one which I think I will get a lot of use out of. It's not quite the more straightforward Word replacement that I was hoping for, but it certainly does everything that I want and more.

I have been wondering about this program and whether it would transfer smoothly into other programs, mainly Microsoft stuff. I want to get it but perhaps I should wait for a revised version to come out? Bummer.

Straight forward text exports to and from Word without difficulty. It's the formating heavy templates that just don't work, although I'm not entirely sure why you'd want to export them anyway if you have Pages to make the document. I've been using Pages as a word processor over the last few days and I love it. It is 'basic' in some ways. There's no mail merge, which is one of the few 'advanced' features that I use a lot in Word. There's no auto correction either, but that just made me lazy. But it's lovely to use and the ease with which the text can be formated is a real treat.

The interesting thing that I have noticed is that I have suddenly become much more aware of the formating styles that I use. When a Word document is imported into Pages it brings with it all the styles used in Word. I must admit I was a bit lazy on some of my documents, and I have something like 20 different styles set up in a fairly simple Word document. I guess this explains why some paragraphs just will not stay formated as you want them to sometimes. Pages styling is just more transparent.

There are some problems, but so far I really like it.

It wouldn't be me exporting them so to speak. I was hoping that if I send something to someone who uses Word they would be able to read it without issues(does that make sense). It looks like I can do that. YaY! It is definitly something that I'm going to need.

I just got it today and am writing a thesis outline. It makes everything look so pretty -- with that delicious pdf looking "times" font. It is really easy to look at and work with. in text citations and footnotes are much easier than Word and you're right about formatting -- something I never paid much attention too before. I've had a few annoyances. Many of the keyboard shortcuts don't work. I've had problems with italics and bold. It also doesn't have a grammer check, which never really worked in Word anyway but did come in handy when I forgot to capitalize a word. Those are things to think about Apple, if you are reading. The whole point of using these apple products is because they look great on your Mac. This one is well worth the price. I hope they have an update before I am forced to switch back Word and if they package it with an Excel parity my Microsoft habit will be kicked to the curb.

Hi, I landed here by chance while looking for news on iWork. I have an advice about your issue to send documents that non-mac/pages users can read: I export them in pdf, then anyone can read them. When the pdf gets too bulky (which it tends to get in Pages export), I use a neat little app called "pdfshrink" (http://www.apago.com/getprodpage.cgi?prodname=PDFshrink) to do just what it says: shrink my pdfs to size. the last one I shrank down to 240Ko from 9,7Mo...(lots of pictures) and it still looks perfect on screen. I hope this will be useful. Cheers *Greg
