mariah carey on flies and death
You'll never guess what has just happened to me. I received the following email from Connie Filippello Publicity, 49 Portland Road, London W11 4LJ T: +44 20 7229 5400 F: +44 20 7229 4804 fax
"In 1996 a quote was posted on a number of websites claiming that Mariah had said the following: ‘…I’d love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff.’ Please remove the quote from your website immediately as it is untrue and Mariah Carey’s legal team are currently working on finding the source. An incorrect citing can do a great deal of damage and we ask that you take this into consideration with such a false accusatory article. Sadly national newspapers have picked up on this recently so it is imperative that it is removed from your website to prevent further inaccuracies."
I thought it was a joke, so I called the telephone number for the company, and it turns out that they're Mariah Carey's publicists in London. They're for real! A quick search of the internet has them linked to George Michael and others. Anyway, I spoke with a charming young woman, who tried hard not to laugh as she told me how personally damaging comments like this are to songbird Mariah, IQ42, and she pointed out that The Times was preparing to retract their report of the comments. She asked me if I was prepared to take the quote off our site. I told her that given what I know about Mariah, which is nothing, I wouldn't be surprised if she had said it, and it didn't matter to me if it was true because it was funny. The charming young woman then told me that their legal department was about to become involved in the matter. I've never been threatened in such a nice way before.
I only had one burning question, and that was how the hell had she got my email address. She tried to pretend that she had done a search of the internet herself and found the comments. But she sounded a little unsure of herself. I suspect that this company has been paying f**king spammers to send out these ridiculous emails.
We concluded our telephone conversation with another gentle threat from her. All in all I had a very enjoyable few minutes.
I now have a dilemma. Should I remove the comments now that I know that Mariah is so upset about them that she has actually employed someone to have them removed from the internet? Or, should I wait to hear what happens next? I think I will leave the quote where it is, just because Mariah Carey is too stupid for words, has more money than sense, and paid f**king spammers so that they can continue to clog up the arteries of the internet. Don't get me wrong, I do feel sorry for Mariah. She hasn't had a hit record for ages and the plastic surgery really hasn't worked out as well as she had hoped. I just wish I liked her music because then I could get my own back by downloading a few albums from one of those free sites.
You too can be part of this fun. You don't have to feel ignored by Mariah. Feel free to post the quote, or, better still, phone the publicists, and tell them you received the email anyway. If we can keep their phone lines clogged for a few days, then maybe they would think twice about using f**king spammers again.
I'll end with my favourite quote from Mariah: "My friends call me mermaid because I like to swim."

Your blog doesn't actually attribute the quote to Mariah, it just asks "who said this". Can you have legal action against you for asking a question?

Didn't take them long to find you either - only a few days since you posted the quote and only 2 days since Google indexed it!
Posted by: Steve | 26 Nov 2004 18:17:28
Didn't realise that. They must have used f**king spammers. The whole thing is quite bizzare.

THAT is the funniest thing I've heard for ages ...... surely you explained to the charming publicity woman that, as a someone who works within the care industry, that you understand that maybe Mariah 'was in a bad place' if she did indeed say the alledged statement; and that, in fact, we all understand, that, of course, it wasn't the 'real Mariah', who does of course have a Mensarian level of intelligence. Then you could have left you business card, in case Mariah 'needed someone to talk to' in the future. I'm sure she would appreciate it.

Oh, oh *wipes tear from her eye*, that is absolutely priceless. Or should I say potentially costly?
That is the absolute best thing I have seen all week. Only you the duet of McMuffinness could have something like this fall upon your laps. Admittedly it is a wonderful distraction from kittie potty and work trauma. I believe it should be milked for all it is worth.

OMG! What fucking nerve those people have to track you down, send you an email and threaten you will legal action! I have a friend who works for Miz Carey in a capacity I probably shouldn't mention who is always telling me what a snotty bitch she is. She and her publicity team truly need to get over themselves. Gah!
Posted by: Retro Girl | 27 Nov 2004 04:11:45
To be fair, I don't think Mariah tracked us down, but rather the spamming company that they use, probably the same one that sends us the porn spam, sent the email to all the addresses they have harvested, and it was just a coincidence that we had posted on the subject. The mad thing is that she thinks that she can stop something circulating on the internet. Also her publicists really don't get how damaging it is to Mariah for them to use spammers for this sort of thing. I think it is another example of big business not quite getting how to use the internet and the various communities that live there.

I was just thinking that maybe I could help out here. It's a bit of "really big" thing for me to do, considering that we barely know each other beyond the odd comment left here and there, but I could have a word with Mariah for you. She's been wanting to get back with me ever since I broke up with Kylie and I could make it a condition of me seeing her again that she drops any actions against you. Of course I'd have to make out that we're bigger friends than just "blogmates", and I might have to request something from you in return for this (the nude pics of MrsMc that you promise me never did arrive). And anyway, I feel partly responsible. It was only amidst the acrimony of her break up with me that Mariah said that stuff about being skinny, flies, death, bla bla bla. I think the fact I left her for Kylie made her feel fat and ugly or something, which of course she isn't.
Anyway, say the word and I'll see what I can do.

Steve, if you could do anything, we'd be really grateful. Naked picture grateful, there's a lovely one of me at 18 months.
SC, Jo and RG, thanks so much for your supportive comments. Remember you can get your own Mariah lawsuit with a little judicious cutting and pasting.

What strange wording in the e-mail you received:
Sadly national newspapers have picked up on this recently so it is imperative that it is removed from your website to prevent further inaccuracies.[Emphasis added.]
Does this mean you should remove it from your site because national newspapers have picked up on it, and they will realise that it can't be true if it doesn't appear on your blog?
Back to school for someone, I think...
Posted by: David (TEFL Smiler) | 27 Nov 2004 23:42:57
Maybe the national newspapers read it on this blog...
BTW, I had a word with Mariah and she said sorry, it's out of her hands already (don't you hate the way americans overuse the word "already"). She also said "just who are these McMuffin people anyway".

I think it's a cryin shame that Mariah should have her most truest fans have to pay to join her fan club. It's just not right she makes enough money why take it away from us hard working fans that love her. Elvis Presley don't charge his fan's to join his fan clubs. Why should Mariah have her fans pay to be in her fan club????

Hello! Yall might not read this but all i want to know is what is Mariah Carey really feeling right now and does anybody care about it. Yall need to get someone who understands her and knows whats shes going trough. Gosh she wouldnt have to go though this pain if someone was involed but what i mean by involed is that that person will not try to get autographs and stuff like that some who will listen and do there best ablity to try to help. If she had a someone like that would she be in this posision. Like in her new song that one verse says:
I'm feeling all out of my elemants
I'm throwing things, crying
Trying to figure out
Where the hell I went wrong
The pain reflected in this song
It ain't even half of what
Im feeling inside
I need you
Need you back in my life, baby
Did anyone acutally sat down and talk to her about what this song meant to her? Did they ask if there was anything they could do to help her without getting the prest involed? NO I DONT THINK SO! Just because Mariah is a singer does not mean shes money and I know thats all yall care about. So yall need to show some respcect shes a human being like your-selfs. I might not beable to make a diffents becasue shes probably doesnt have time to talk to me but i know one of just one of you can make a differents in her life so step off of the im all that and get on the step thats says, Is there anything that I can help with? Thats I really have to say and if u would show her this and let her open up to one of you. She will feel better (i hope). Please do this for me and let me know she read this please. Do something to tell me that she did get this please. Brittany Farr/Fort Worth/13/Female

Ah, bless. I was going to write something with a little bit more edge to it, but then I realised that Brittany is only 13.
Brittany, a little word of advice: you're giving away too much information about yourself.

It was a fake quote from a satirical piece.

Posted by: Branden | 3 Aug 2006 22:26:54
So what if she's more famous than the rest of us - should we admire her because of that? Especially when it is common knowledge that she's a rude and snotty cow - I don't respect anyone with no manners, no matter how famous they are.
