looking good
I love my new job. All that anxiety, complaining and let's face it, fear and I'm really enjoying myself. It's going to be hard, as the team is depleted through training and there are scarily varying levels of competence, but it's nice being in charge of it all. I probably won't be saying this next week, so I think it's important for me to share the happy for once.
Like most miserable old gits, I'm not outside watching the fireworks as I can see the display in the park from my kitchen window. Last year I made an effort to go out and was very excited when I found one of those fairground stalls where you can hire balls and throw them at rows and rows of china. I was so overwhelmed by the thought of legitimately smashing pottery, that I went a bit mad with the throwing and one of the balls sailed over the roof of the stall into the masses. I bid a hasty retreat and retired to the pub with my chums. I think it was the sensible thing to do before too many people committed my face to memory.

Poor boy. I wanted to make him a bit of Parkin and a Hot Pot, but he hates Lamb. What's a hot pot sans lamb? Not to mention we have winds right now gusting at over 50 M.P.H., I somehow feel a sentimental bonfire is out of the question. He's taking it like a trooper though.

I DID join in the celebrations last night and went outside to the park to watch fireworks. Two things. Firstly, we are of course celebrating a plot to blow up a government. Even at a young age I always found this a difficult concept to get my head around - spending 'government' (public) money on celebrating a plan to halt their power in the most spectacular way. I know that in theory the 5th Nov is supposed to be rejoicing in the foiling of the plot but still - surely that means that, in fact, NO gunpowder (or sparklers, catherine wheels and roman candles for that matter) was ignited on the original Nov 5th......
Secondly, my borough is obviously charging me far to much bloody council tax if they can afford to send that much money up in smoke - for 35 minutes no less!
Ba humbug.

Congrats on the enjoying the new job! And what pray tell, are the celebrations for? I'd like to know as we might consider celebrating the same thing....anything with fireworks, prizes to be won, and pubs seems like a good thing.

We're a funny bunch over here. In Lewes they burn 'guys' of political leaders. I went there in the 80's and watched Thatcher and Reagan burn. That was fun.

Thanks David! And yes, I can see that watching Maggie and Ronnie burn could be great fun and good for the soul as well.

It was good for the soul and it smelled great! Even as a teenager I knew that this moment was something special. How often do you get to see world leaders in flames? I think they even burned the Pope.
