christ.
We are watching 'The Sadistic Torture of the Christ' and are quite enjoying it. So there aren't any car chases or big explosions and it's delivered in Latin and Aramaic, with simple subtitles for the less able reader, but it seems fine so far. Satan is very creepy and Jim Caviezel has always been a McMuffin favourite despite his unsavoury religiosity. We have always thought of him as the actor most likely to succeed at playing Jesus (Yayshush).
Mr McMuffin thinks that this may be a good companion piece to 'The Last Temptation of Christ'. I haven't seen this, but if it explains that Jesus wasn't a 33 year old single man living with his Mummy, then it has my vote.
Despite my cynicism about the greatest story ever told, it's quite moving and we haven't been bored yet. Mr McMuffin has dropped his recent recent attempts to alter the outcome of films by shouting at the screen (watching 'Speed' the other night he attempted to cut two thirds of the film by yelling at the bus driver not to go above 50 mph and so arm the bomb) and has not been shouting at Jesus to lie about his beliefs.
I have been forced to post in Mr McMuffin's name as typepad are refusing to recognise me for some reason. They have now denied me three times.
For those of you who haven't read the book or seen the film, I don't want to give the whole story away, but please be reassured that in spite of the gore, there is a happy ending and Jesus isn't a redhead.

Out of interest, I just want to point out that there is an error in their language choice, according to something I read ages ago at Language Log. Rather than Latin, Greek would have been used at the time as the lingua franca - even by the Roman soldiers.
Well, I think it's interesting, anyway!
Can't comment on the film, as I haven't seen it. The story doesn't seem all that credible, though, from what I've heard. About time Hollywood made something more realistic, eh?

That is one of my worst habits, you know, 'Don't shut out the light', "No, don't baby sit for him!!!", 'For god sake, don't have sex by the side of the pond on counselor night in a full moon!!!". They never bloody listen do they. I end up watching through my hand and changing the channel at the really stressful buits, at least until they ahve come to their proper senses.
Quite a hilarious post Mrs. M, had me chortling out loud.
I suppose I need to see the film since A) the book is to long, and B) I always ask why and none of the catholics I know can answer me properly.

I haven't seen it myself, but as a survivor of fourteen years of Catholic school I do have live with a tacit sense of obligation that will be with me for the rest of my days, despite my best efforts to the contrary. I do like a good action movie, and from what I've read this one practically erupts with blood.
I'll have to rent it during a weekend spent home alone, as the Wife refuses to see it. Her words: "It's not like I haven't heard this story a million times already. Why do I need to see an especially gory version?"
See? She just needs to get a good ass whipping from the nuns like I did. Then she'd understand.

Jo, this more a how to film. You won't find much to explain why he had to die for our sins.

"how to"... what?
Posted by: Steve | 3 Sep 2004 10:07:50
...die for our sins. It's pretty obvious that he couldn't pass aways quietly in his sleep one night when he was about 87 years old...This film is a how to make a martyr in 12 easy steps kind of thing...all of which are painful.

Satan is indeed creepy--as a matter of fact, if I weren't already a believer, I'd become one, just as an insurance policy against EVER running into "IT". Skank me. Ick.
I was rooting for Jesus to up and punch one of the lummoxes who were beating him so badly, but my wishes weren't granted. Maybe I'll get the DVD and see if Mel provided an alternative story line, like Jesus turning into Terminator or Hellboy.

Melissa: Perhaps you should shout your wishes at the screen?

Spoiler contained in this message.
I haven't seen the new Jesus Splatter movie. I don't know if this happened in GB or not, but the rabid Christians particularly embraced the Mel Gibson version of the passion story and that alone is my primary reason for avoiding it.
In addition, I also don't know if I will ever see it because my family won't read a movie and I don't care enough to see it to watch it alone. Either I have to send them to school to learn Latin and Aramaic or pass on it altogether.
The end? I assume that the guy with the thorny crown dies.

Well, that kind of depends on your point of view, I think. It is an 'interesting' film. Not sure of the point of it. It is well made and moving in parts. I deny anyone not to have little tear in their eye as his mother watches his torture. There is a real sense of sacrifice about the whole thing, which I imagine IS the point. It's worth seeing just to amaze yourself by how Christian you are. I didn't realise that I knew so much about it all. As for your family, Karan, tie them in a chair and make them watch Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. If they don't enjoy that then I will refund the hire cost! Apparently, people got so involved in the film that when they were asked afterward, 33% hadn't realised that it was subtitled. Now that is filmaking.

Dave-
You're most likely right, but I just figured HE could hear my inner thoughts and I needn't shout to the screen.
Oh, jeez, NOW I'm going to hell with that scary he/she devil.

Mr. McMuffin: Regarding Crouching Tiger. I loved all of it EXCEPT for that God-Awful, interminable scene in the cave in the desert. Perhaps I'm just impatient, but ugh! You were in the desert a long time! We get it! Let's move on, please!
