lovin' lizzy and my struggle to regain my street cred after claiming that jefferson starship had made one of the best rock albums in the world ever (TM)

thinlizzyI have never liked live albums very much. There is usually something missing from the performance. However, as usual, there are one or two exceptions to this. The Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East is one such exception. The other, is Thin Lizzy's Live and Dangerous, which surely must rate as one of the best live albums ever. Produced by Tony Visconti in 1978, the album was recorded during the band's tour of the US the previous year. This is Lizzy at the very height of their powers, playing straight ahead melodic rock. I can't even say that I am a big Lizzy fan, but the energy on this album is palpable and it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the performance. Here are a couple of tracks for you to enjoy. The first is a cover of an old Bob Seger song which segues into another tune:Rosalie/Cowgirl's Song. The second is Cowboy Song. Every time I listen to this album these days, I end up thinking of Phil Lynott, who was the lead singer, dying of a heroin overdose in 1986, three years after the band split up. I guess life had to be short for a man who wore his trousers so tight.

Dude! Neil Young's Live Rust! Woo!

Posted by: Jo | 27 Aug 2004 02:18:21

God, how could I have forgotten about Neil, being his number one fan an' all! However, although it's hard to be objective around Neil, Live Rust is good, but not great. It is not one of his albums that I return to time and time again.

What about the live albums by Rush? I know that some people swear by All the World's a Stage, and Exit Stage Left is pretty good, too. However, my personal favourite is A Show of Hands; I can listen to that one again and again and again - and I have done!

Nah! I love Rush, but the live albums are just okay by me. Great band to see live though.

Never one to shirk from my duty, I must inform you both! Rush BITES! Dudes, they suck! In my humble opinion.

Now now, don't hold back, Jo - say what you really think!

What! Rush are magnificent! How can you not appreciate the genuis of Rush? Geddy's amazing singing and bass playing. Alex truly is a guitar god. Neil's fantastic drumming (I accept that he is a pretentious pratt when it comes to lyrics). This is the best power trio around, without any doubt. Sure, they haven't been making much good music lately, but their new album of cover versions is great. I listen to it all the time. Shame on you, Jo Counting Sheep!

Wrong Jo!!! Not me, that was Jo - Spanglemonkey Jo. I love Rush.......
But I would like to add.....
Frampton Comes Alive.

Forgive me. That's one of the problems with the internet, you very quickly realise that there really are only so many names to go around.

The Frampton album is great, that can go on the list.

"there really are only so many names to go around" - Did you try copyrighting all the names? Could be another money making scheme...

Posted by: steve | 28 Aug 2004 08:56:25

That's a great idea, Steve©. If BT can try to copyright the technology behind hyperlinks 30 years after they were invented by someone else, then why can't I make people pay to use their names. I'll work out the charging structure and let you know in due course. In the meantime, feel free to use your name as often as you like, free of charge.

I just played Cowboy Song for husband and he is quite pleased. When I told him your picks he said that yes indeed that Live and Dangerous was one of the finest live albums ever. (He has it on vinyl somewhere). He wished to add Jethro Tull-Live Bursting Out.
