swell time...
Today mostly I have been swelling. I woke up this morning with the right side of my face all swollen from gnat bites. Mrs McMuffin quite likes the sudden appearance of cheek bones. During the course of the day I have been bitten a further three times. Both my hands have been bitten, and they are swelling nicely. I also have a bite on my neck, which fortunately is not swelling. I hate the summer. It's funny how some years I don't get bitten once, and then other years when I really am flavour of the month. Ah well, at least there is not much effort involved in swelling.

What the f*ck is a gnat??? I've never heard anyone native of this land call an insect a gnat! I presume you're referring to the noble midgie when you use this term?

We must have a richer vocabulary dahn sarf. Midges are tiny, gnats slightly bigger and mosquitoes are the size of houses.
Perhaps gnats are a southern thing full stop. They probably live in Docklands apartments, take taxis everywhere and have a bottle of vanilla vodka in the freezer.

The cold weather kills anything smaller than a housefly up here, so we're not overly troubled with gnats, midgies or mosquitoes. That warm climate will be the death of you in the end, all those nasty insects, even foreign ones, setting up home there and bringing their venom and their diseases with them. Give me the cold, sterile northern clime any day.

But the Western Islea have a big midge proble in the summer and it's not hot there. I'll see if they can export them south to you, so you too can experience the joy of blood sucking flying things in your own garden.

Maybe it's the cold winds from the North Sea that blows them all away from Steve. (What about your homeland archipelago, Mr M?)
Mrs M: We have lots of midges in Yorkshire. Mosquitos seem to only really hang around rivers in the middle of forests, though. Gnats don't bite, do they? They just annoy, that's all.
I've just been bitten in a vertical line: twice at the bottom of my neck (one above the other), and once in the middle of my forehead. If this continues it will mark out exactly the left and right halves of my body.
Normally the little biting things follow my veins on my arms and legs, but in this instance they're going for some kind of modern art.
