space...

space

Recently I read a couple of people talking about whether they'd use up their Typepad storage space quickly if they post lots of photos. This is a fairly photo-heavy site, and in the last six months we have used up 2.36% of our storage space. We have a bells and whistle package from Typepad, so I'm not sure if it is the same for everyone, which allows us 200Mb of storage. By my calculations it will take us about 20 years to use up all of our space at our current consumption. I'm hoping that some new technology that we can't even dream of right now will have taken over by then. So, stop worrying about it, and get posting. The more photos the better as far as I am concerned. By the way, please stop using those piddly little photos, unless it is for some kind of design reason. I can understand that. I hate having to click on them to see the photo properly. Sometimes it is just one click too many.

UPDATE: Just checked the Typepad site, and if you have a basic package and a site with as many photos as this one, which few seem to do, then it will last you about 5 years. If you have the next deal up, then it will last you about 10 years. Either way, there is just no excuse for not posting lots and lots of photos. Of course, this does not apply to Mrs McMuffin, who doesn't know how to post a photo!

Good to know about the space thing. Thanks! I have the medium TP package, so I suppose I've got a decade.

By the way, I've been using little photos for two reasons. One is because some people I know are still on dial-up, and it takes them forever to load a page. In a couple of cases it's because dial-up is their only option. Besides, with photo-heavy blogs, it can take ages even for someone with a fast connection to load a page. Take this one, for example, Mr M - I normally go and make a cup of tea and re-write my memoires from scratch while waiting for it to load. But normally it's worth the wait! (Ahh!!!)

The other reason why I've been using little photos is because they're just a complimentary motif, indicating some sort of theme, and which can be recognised without needing to click on them. The next time I want to really show a photo, though, you can be sure it will be 350 things in width, and pop-up for an even larger version, rather than my current tendency towards 100 things in width.

OK, I'm off to watch football. On a big, big screen! :-)

Thanks for that. I was wondering about those poor souls on dial up. Since we went over to broadband, we have kind of forgotten they exist, although we do have one dear friend who can't get broadband, but we say, plenty more where she came from. Do we really take a long time to load?

I have used 5% of my space in about 5 months, so my disk will be full in about 8 years. It still worries me though, but maybe by then I'll be able to afford the super-duper loadsamegabytes version of TypePad.

Don't worry, when I checked your site from up in Maine where a 14.4 connection is what you get on a good day, it loaded in a pretty reasonable amount of time. Pixel us baby!
