i, robot...

irobot

Six months ago I posted this. I couldn't quite work out what it was. I now know that it was a teaser for the new Alex Proya film, I, Robot, which stars Will Smith. Alex Proya is the fella who directed The Crow and Dark City, both of which are amazing to look at. The prospect of him directing a robot film with lots and lots of money makes me so excited that I think I am going to wet myself.

However, there is a dark side to all of this, apart from the wet patch on my trousers. I love the Asimov robot stories, and it fills me with not a little dread to hear Alex Proya say, "we've taken licence to create our own story within the confines of Asimov's world." Please, God, don't let it be another Bicentennial Man...

We saw the preview of this too at the weekend and it looks great, apart from the fact hat the (obviously animated) robots look a bit cartoonish - I hope that doesn't spoil it.

Unfortunately, I think it'll be worse than Bicentennial Man. I don't care who you are, but if you are adapting Azimov, leave the story alone. No good can come of this.

It's like the maulings that are dealt out to Philip K. Dick's stories. Outside of BladeRunner, what adaptation has even come close to the skill of his writing?

Am I alone, then, in quite enjoying Bicentennial Man?

If I was being really truthful, I would admit to having watched it twice. Even Robin Williams' terrible performance couldn't quite ruin the story for me. It was a very, very, very bad film, and I don't mean that in a good way, but I so wanted to see the story made into a film that I was prepared to put up with virtually anything. The sad thing is that it will be years, if ever, until they make a proper version of the story.

Teddy, I think 'Screamers' was a really faithful but low budget adaptation of 'Second Variety'. I saw it some time ago, but remember liking it.

I would love to see Asimov's 'The Gods themselves' made into a film. It's one of my favourites and i think after LOTR the technology is up to it.

Bugger, I've done it again. That was ME, not HIM. He can't even remember 'The Gods themselves'.
