oor wullie...
Who remembers Oor Wullie? This was one of my favourites as a kid, and I always got an album at Christmas time. I think he was probably more of a Scottish character. I am sure he is still around because Mrs McMuffin got me an album one Christmas a few years ago. I think he appears in a strip in one of the Scottish newspapers. I am not sure he travels well, so it is unlikely that many of of our American cousins will have heard of him.
Oor Wullie was such a naughty boy. He was always up to something. I used to love him. You can sample his adventures here. This is probably typical of the sort of story the strip followed.

And someone got paid for that storyboard? Wow, the past was pretty crap, wasn't it? :-)
Actually, that cartoon is quite cool (man!), simply due to its extreme naffness. I wonder if it would still appeal to a child of today, though. Perhaps it would.

What do you mean? That was from the 1996 album! We Scots have simple tastes. That is why I like Mrs McMuffin.

I never got beyond the Dandy, the Beano and Viz, so I know little about the style of any other comics. Maybe I'm being too harsh. On second thoughts, it really was a strange storyline!

Ah, dear Wullie. Last time I checked, the wee lad turned up every Sunday in that most bizarre and provincial of papers, The Sunday Post (The Broons too, but I've never cared much for them) - http://www.dcthomson.co.uk/mags/post/

Ahh...So that's where he is! I knew he was somewhere, but I just couldn't remember. I loved the Broons too.

Aye, we used to get The Sunday Post (F*ck knows why) and I used to read Oor Wullie, or at least try to, with all those silly phoenetic scottish words. He used to play "Fitba" as I recall! :-S

Jings Crivens help ma boab.
Children of today love him still - especially the older non PC cartoons (i.e. corporal punishment from his Paw on a reglar basis). Can't keep my kids away from the books - they vanish four hours with my collection - just as I did with my mums.

I know the Broon and OOR Wullie are excellent. I was brought up on them too. My Grandfather was from Scotland and I have now moved here. The comic strip is in the Sunday Post and I have just found out an excellent web site www.dcthompson.com/annuals where I can get the annuals at a special rate even better, I can't wait for them to arrive and read this years.
Keep enjoying

Och, awa' wi' ye, ye cheeky wee hoodlum!
I was raised on Oor Wullie an' The Broons - my father was born and raised in Dundee and the Sunday Post was a weekly staple for every family. After moving to the U.S., my uncle not only sent us the annuals for Christmas, but also copies of The Dandy and The Beano. Now, my daughter is reading them.
If you're ever in Florida in January, come visit our Highland Games! flascot.com Cheers!
