does my bum look big in this...

Testing...testing...123. I would appreciate a little help from all you lovely people. This is a screen shot of what the site looks like to me. I use Safari and I have tested it with Internet Explorer and Netscape, and, apart from the clumsy rendering of IE and Netscape, it looks the same in all three browsers. Is this what you see? Any comments are welcome. Thanks.
By the way, the photos really are of us, including one of us being married, all heavily disguised, of course. I have reworked our 'about us' page too. That now has no words, just more pictures of us and some of the important people and things in our life.
Mrs McMuffin likes the new design but is not very keen on the photos that I have chosen of her. Ah well, I say to her, this is LIFE and this is ART...I don't usually get to say much more before she starts hitting me. One day I will finish that thought...

The "everything down the left" bug is back. It was OK yesterday, but not now.
So ALL the pics are actually you two, even the one at the right that looks so much like a cake? Amazing what you can do with photoshop!

Damn, damn, damn...I just don't know what to do if I can't see it. I don't read html too good, and it is a bit trial and error. But I will keep at it.

By the way, someone has quite a sexy mouth. I just hope it's not Mr McMuffin!
Posted by: steve | 11 Apr 2004 11:49:48
Ha! I have been complimented many times on my sexy mouth. Mrs McMuffin is the one with the beard and the double chin. I think her mouth is sexy once you get past the face fur.

You've gotta pretty mouth too, boy! [Is that the sound of banjos I hear?]

All looks fine in Mozilla Firefox, but then I never noticed anything was wrong in the first place!
Posted by: Kirsty | 11 Apr 2004 13:20:50
Oh, then the thoughts I had last night were not just naughty and wrong, they were now also somewhat hideous!
Posted by: steve | 11 Apr 2004 13:28:38
They were naughty and wrong, and underline my campaign to remove that ugly photo with a whole new set of reasons. Don't worry too much, your hetero credentials are still intact!

You are all down the left in my IE 6.0. Hang on and I'll launch Firefox as well....
you look just ducky in Firefox. Must be an IE specific evil.
Off to look at the new About page......

I knew it was the evil Bill wot had it in for our lovely blog. But why has he targeted us in particular. He must have rewritten the code just so it would mess up when it reached our site. How can I deal with that? He is so rich and powerful, and I am like an ant beneath his feet. A plaything if you will. Why Bill, oh why Bill what have I ever done to you?
Posted by: mr mcmuffin | 11 Apr 2004 20:21:56
Yup--once again you're in the left hand side of my screen, as well. I use IE. Wish I could help. Anything I can do?
Posted by: Retro Girl | 11 Apr 2004 20:37:03
Suggestion to IE users: dump IE. Simple, really! :-)
Wow, the whole screen shot thing on the left is freaky! I'm amazed at your technological expertise. Is it possible to get one of those yellow name-tag things when we hover our cursors over each picture, to see where each picture links to?

Thanks to you all for your help, and especially Retro Girl for looking through the code. We think you may be right, Retro Girl. You are talented AND beautiful, is that fair?

.. and she has the eyes of Agnetha from Abba!
But did it help your page layout? It seems not.
And my spyware tells me that 96% of my visitors use IE6, so you really should target your majority audience and not this small and seedy minority who lurk beneath their dirty macs!!

I think it is a bit crude to be talking only about numbers here. Surely style, panache, and the fact that they can view our site without problems has got to stand Mac users in good stead? I know it is hard to admit when you're wrong, especially after spending God knows [you've got me at it now!] how many hundreds of pounds on a Windows machine. Go on...I get the impression that you are big enough to admit that really you should have bought a Mac. Think of it as the first step in the twelve step programme we like to call 'Repenting the Apple way, or How Steve saved me from Bill, who is the height of evility'. In fact, if you need further proof, I belief that Steve Jobs was responsible for the sunny weather we had today.
I think that the £8 or so a month that Typepad costs for the full version is money well spent, even if all its wonders are bit like handing me a loaded gun to play with. It was only a matter of time 'til something bad happened.
Posted by: mr mcmuffin | 12 Apr 2004 00:03:37
Erm, something bad's happened... most of the side-y bits have disappeared. But I'm guessing you know about that...
Is this turning you grey, I wonder?

all seems fine and dandy - even to me an IE6 user. Looking good and loadiing quicker too now.

You're right, my PC cost hundreds of pounds, I didn't realise that Macs are free, I was always lead to believe that they're almost twice as much as a real computer! And is it possible to put in 3 unfeasibly large (and incredibly cheap) hard drives (upgrading repeatedly as required), a dvd burner, 6USB ports, gigabytes of RAM and so on? Seriously, I never viewed Macs as baing very "hands on" and user-upgradeable to the scale that PCs are (and what happens when/if they break?). I may want another machine soon (for wife) and a Mac could be an option if my preconceptions about them are wrong.

You're right on all accounts. They are more expensive [although you can get a decent iMac with the flat screen for about £900] and the iMac has a limited upgrade curve. You can still get a Gb of memory into it. I was a die-hard wintel user for many years, paying only the occasional admiring glance at Macs. I would never go back to Windows now. It is hard to explain the difference - everything on a Mac just works and seems to work better. OS 10.3 is truly a fantastic piece of software. It is entirely intuitive, if it looks like it should do something, it usually does it. All the different bits of the OS are beautifully integrated. For example, I can check an address in the address book, and be given an option to enter an appointment in my diary or even be shown a map of the address on the internet. Probably the biggest difference between the two systems that I have noticed is that I can have Word, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Safari, Address Book, Mail, Excel and iTunes all open and running at the same time. I can't really explain the techy stuff, I just know that the system rarely slows down and never crashes, although it does have what Apple likes to call a 'kernel panic', which I think is Apple speak for crash. In the 18 months of Maccing I have had three kernel panics.
Strangely enough since I got my Mac I have felt less need to upgrade. Maybe I have just reached the point where my machine does what I want it to do. I was forever buying new sound cards or video cards or new hard drives when I was using Windows.
If you want to tinker with the insides then a G5 is the machine for you. You can add up to 8Gb of RAM, and everything else you could possibly want. They are expensive, and you have to get a separate monitor. But...Have I mentioned how beautiful everything Apple is? I still get a kick out of looking at my Mac.
I have gone on long enough, but before I finish, just one last thing...The main reason I gave up Windows was because I got a bit bored with it. I had played and tinkered about as much as I could. I am not really interested in the deep techy stuff. I just needed something new.
PS If your wife is not techy minded like you then an iMac would be a great buy for her to use. Bear in mind though that there will probably be a new model out this year as the current iMacs have just about reached the limits of their design. I can't wait...I'll be first in the queue to hand over my cash.

Oh you don't know how good it fels to be "right on all accounts". It happens so rarely at home - I'll have to visit these pages more often! ;-)
There's no doubting Apple's good looks and great user interface, it's everything Windows should have been. Even 15 years ago before I owned a PC Sister-in-law used to bring a Mac home from work at weekends and I was amazed by it. Ultimately cost deters me (the last time I spent a fortune on something that looks great and performs beautifully was Wife, and once bitten...), and the fact that everyone in my circle is a PC user too (so we share bits, software and expertise...)
Probably an iMac for wife would be good - she wants something small, attractive and easy to use - and then we could have the best of both worlds too.
