comics...

NewStatesmen

Retro Girl has got me thinking about comics. This has always been one of my favourites. It came out in a five part book in 1989, but had been in print before that in the pages of 2000AD. I even have a bit of a connection to the comic. When we lived in Orkney we lived a short distance from Jim Baikie's house and were friendly with one of his daughters. She used to say, "my dad draws comics", but I was probably the only person around who knew that he was in fact one of the early mainstays of 2000AD. Unfortunately I was too cool to gush, and I never got to meet him.

Anyway, who could resist this:

A country torn apart from within. A country revolutionised by genetic engineering. A country where every state has it's own superhuman and one of them is running for President. Now, after six years in exile, five maverick Statesmen are brought back for the annual reunion. But things have changed. Corruption has set in, and they soon find themselves fighting the dark side of the American dream.

Was more of a Deadline / Tank Girl comics type, myself. The TG film they made was, of course, utter sh**e.

Yeah, I remember this from 2000AD. I used to get it every week, along with Roy Of The Rovers (I'm talking up to age 28 here). My favourite from 2000AD was Rogue Trooper, a brilliant tale of a future warrior who carried his dead companions around as bio-chips in his weaponry. Strontium Dogs was another favourite and tears were shed when Johnny Alpha died for the sake of Muties everywhere!

You're a lovely man, Steve...I bought 2000AD until I was in my 30s. And Strontium Dog and Rogue Trooper have always been my favourites. Don't you think they would make fantastic films?

Thanks, Mrs Mc doesn't think so after my posting today (lol).

Rogue Trooper especially deserved more, more graphic novels, maybe some real novels and yes, even a movie. The whole concept was well thought out and implemented, and in fact resembles in some ways the descriptions of future-wars in Richard Morgan's first two books.
