childhood memories...

Steve has got me thinking. I too had some idea when we started this blog that we too would use the opportunity to talk about our experiences growing up, but the day to day stuff and all the trivia seems to take over. In many ways that is so much more fun. I suppose it is easier to write about cheesy bugs gone bad than what it was like for us as growing up. I guess there is also something in there about the exposure that we would get on internet. When we began to get involved in all this blogging stuff I suppose I had some idea that we would remain anonymous and that this would allow me to say practically anything that I liked. However, the more we blog the more we seem to develop 'virtual friendships' with lots of people who come from all over the world, and while it is unlikely that we will ever meet any of these people, although I now wouldn't rule out that possibility at some point in the future, the usual stuff seems to take over. I have a particular way of being in the world, and rarely do I talk to people about the things that are important to me. I am trying to say that the opinion of these people, and, yes, you are one of these people, hold of me, means a lot to me. At one level this all seems a bit sad...Much as Mrs McMuffin just wants to be pretty, I just want people to like me, which makes it kind of difficult to stray from the superficial.

Ducky, we all want to be liked. We come here to read both your comedic repertoire as well as hope to find little bits and pieces that help us to figure out what you, the formerly faceless (now only partially formerly faceless), people might be all about.
Don't worry that we won't like you, as they say darling, you can choose your friends but you can't choose your family.

Purge it!

I think it's possible to do a string of "woe is me" style postings, which makes people keep coming back to see what other terrible things are befalling you, in a bit of an EastEnders or "cars driving slowly past an accident" style - I know, as I've done that blogging and I saw my stats at the time! But it can't be kept up for too long, as it turns into a face threat of some kind for the reader. And I'm pretty sure it's not the same as popularity!

Perhaps you could have a secondary blog: Mr and Mrs McMuffin: The Darker Side! (Steve could join in with his Pot Noodle addiction!) However, keeping up two blogs can be more hassle than it's worth. (Just imagine if you had a second evil spirit to have to deal with!) Maybe you'd be happy with the occasional splurge of dismay and misery on this main blog, amongst all the funny stuff? There's something almost post-post-post-postmodern about that! (Sorry, I hate terms like "postmodernism", as I don't understand them and I don't think anyone else can agree on what they really mean, either!)

I suppose that the most important thing is that no blogger should feel trapped or forced to write for other people. We each pay TypePad from our own pockets, after all! They're our own blogs, for us to do whatever we want with (well, apart from anything on the TypePad "banned" list).

And then we can be given the opportunity to like you for a more rounded you (unless the unknown side is really frightening).

On a lighter note, I saw a little mouse the other night, just outside our backdoor. It was really sweet. Do you think Percy would be a good name for a mouse?

We love our McMuffins!!!!

As soon as the dust settles here at the office and I can think straight enough to buy postage stamps, I'll mail that Sacramento postcard to you. I have it right here.

Hi McMuffins! Nice site, but I have to ask, what is the photo of the cockroaches all about?

Speaking as a semi-experienced blogger (wow, a whole eleven months, whoa) if you put a "reality" type post in every ten days or so, it makes for fascinating reading.

People like you at first for the fun, happy stuff, but they really want to get to know you even more. When I do this I get a lot of feedback.

I can see by the failed Cheesy Bug cross-link that you didn't understand trackbacks!
Speaking of "virtual friends" - is there a problem with the mail?
