I Robot
I was reading Kirsty over at Boblog (still can't do little linky thing, and it must be so easy if Mr McMuffin can do it) and she had a great post about the disappointment of her class at the robots on Mars. They expected them to be incredibly sophisticated androids. I started waffling about my fear of the things, and immediately thought of Cybermen and Daleks.
Doctor Who was so fantastic when I was a child, I'm sure that so many of us hid behind the settee when the Daleks came on, and I'm not sure why we were so scared. First of all they spoke in silly, tinny voices and they couldn't even go up stairs to get you. They looked like Christmas trees with upside down saucepans for heads, but they were truly terrifying to me, particularly when they became able to hover. As children we went to some exhibition where you could get inside a Dalek and make it move. Gypsy Tart thought that this was fun, but I ran out screaming.
Now I'm grown up I really enjoy the gay Daleks on tv, and am desperate to go to a fancy dress party as one. I even pretend to be Davros at work sometimes (sit on a chair with wheels, put a coat over your legs and try to look shrivelled, with one hand sticking out, and use your feet to push the chair, and you can chase people round the room). I think that this is one way of managing my fear, but if right now I heard 'Exterminate' I really think I would run and hide.

Actually I thought the tinny voice added to the scariness because it was unnatural and mechanical. As a child it never crossed my mind that they couldn't get up and down stairs and would even struggle on Darlington's terribly laid paving (maybe the council did this as an anti-Dalek safety precaution). Of course these days it's easy to mock the Daleks for their obvious failings, but they're still one of TV and Sci-Fi's greatest super-villains. They're remaking DR Who with Chris Ecclestone in the lead. Dunno if the Daleks will be back - I hope so.

thanks for that, I couldn't remember who the new Dr was going to be. I really hope it's good.

Me too. I have this dilemma with Dr Who. Was it really good when I was small and got worse and worse as it went on, or did I just get older and see it for the low budget rubbish that it was? I hope the former, and I'm fairly sure of it. The early Series were quite dark and threatening (Daleks, Cybermen, Ice Warriors), and the Doctor's quite serious and thoughtful, right up to Tom Baker. After that they just became pantomime and Silverster McCoy was a total joke, and the villains moreso, with real comedy make-up. These days they COULD make something really quite good, but will they...

I think it might have been poo all along. I have asked my parents to tell me what it was like for them to watch, but they just smile enigmatically and say it was 'quite good'. Bless them, they knew I never believed in Father Christmas, now the want me to hang on to my belief in the Doctor!

The daleks were a bit crap really, all you'd have to do to escape was run up some stairs. But I never missed an episode in my youth.
Favourite Doctor was either Tom Baker (for the scarf and deep voice) or Peter Davison.
Sophie Aldred (one of the female helpers -possible Ace) is the presenter on the Words and Pictures videos I watch with my class.

My husband is a huge Dr. Who fan--his favorite was Tom Baker. When he was a kid, he had a crush on whatshername from the show. To tell you the truth, I never watched it but for here and there and always thought it was a low budget time waster, but I think it had a huge cult following, so I was probably wrong about that.

I really hope that 'whatshername' wasn't Bonny Langford, Retro Girl!
Hilarious posting, Mrs Mc! I think the thing about the Daleks was that even though they couldn't handle the stairs, it didn't matter, as once they appeared they were there in force, coming round every corner.
