cheesy bugs and white dog poo

Inspired by Single Cookie's question: Where IS all the white dog poo?

I think that people generally don't have as many dogs, and it is socially unacceptable to let them foul the pavements or footpaths. I imagine that there is less poo around to dessicate, assuming white poo is dessicated. I seem to recall as a kid that it crumbled when you stepped in it, as opposed to the squishy stuff you tracked all over the house after your Mum had yelled at you to take your shoes off, or at least check them.

These are just my thoughts, does anybody actually know? Was this poo from a now extinct breed of dog? As adults do we not see poo as much as we used to? I can't remember the last time I stepped in any, or really noticed it.

I guess you can call this scraping the barrel.

Wow! Parrallel universes do exist. As a kid, there was always a lot of white dog poo in my neighborhood, also. Now, I never see it. However, I have an explanation: In the old days, people were not required to pick up their dog's poop, so it just sat on the ground and turned white and then to powder or whatever. Today, if you aren't walking around with a plastic bag or something to pick up after your dog, you are considered a sociopathic misfit. Result: Poop still turns white, but in your garbage can.

I think you're right, and will advise Single Cookie that this isn't just confined to the uk. However, the big question is what do you call cheesy bugs (wood lice) ?

the elusive white poo
by j @ counting sheep

Ahhh,I remember the days well. White poo was plentiful along footpaths and on the roadside verge.
Unsightly brown poo was bleached dry by the sun and the slightest pressure on the poo pile by an unsuspecting shod foot could release crumbles of plaster like substance.
Actually, I agree, you did used to see it more. I know that dog's that eat a lot of rawhide bones or strips tend to have whitish poo.
Alas, the rug cleaners find was brown, leading me to believe the sun has something to do with it.

Having obviously nothing else to discuss last night, I posed the elusive white poo dilemma to husband.
His theory is dogs used to eat more soup or marrow bones, hence pulverized calcium, hence white poo. It's his story and he's sticking to it.

Well this one has got people thinking. I appreciate all your comments and hope Single Cookie manages to find an explanation for this modern phenomenon.

Please feel free to continue to speculate, but remember this is a 'didn't wagon wheels used to be bigger?' free zone.

Well you guys must live in a very nice area. I play dodge the dog poo when I am out walking! People round here are digusting.

Posted by: Amy | 17 Dec 2004 16:25:04

White dog poo is caused when other dogs wee on it to mark the territory the urea then bleaches out the poo and turns it white... v sad!

Posted by: snofleur | 11 Jan 2005 15:10:18

White dog poo is dropped by albino dogs.

Posted by: Carl D | 14 Mar 2005 07:32:51

I don't think it can be a sun bleached thing, I can leave my dog's poo in the garden for weeks and it dosn't go white. As for the wee bleached theory, have the dogs stopped weeing on it?

Well, thanks to Andrew and his workmate for eating all the white dog poo. Not my cup of tea, but a public service of sorts I suppose.

amazing - my wife, her sister her husband and I were pondering the same "white dog poo" problem tonight...thanks for all your insights...but what is the REAL answer? I'm taking my dog out for a poo now and am keen to avoid any embarassing white moments.

There's a discussion along with some actual pictures of white poo.

Posted by: Tacheman | 2 May 2005 20:41:13

I have noticed today one of my dog's has done a white poo!!! Why???

Posted by: Susan | 8 Jun 2005 21:32:49

My mother told me that white dog poo from back in the day come from poodles. I believe this to be a fact as she clipped poodles as her job for a while. Therefore qualifies her to make this white poo diagnosis.

Posted by: CJ May | 8 Jul 2005 19:22:15

what is the precise moment called when dog poop turns white. There must be a scientific name for it??

Posted by: delta | 16 Aug 2005 04:54:27

My teeth were and still are white despite lots of munching - thanks for nothing

Posted by: Ben Steele | 9 Sep 2005 22:13:21

Recently dessicated a carrier bag full of defficated dog food, sprinkled it with oxo gravy granules and fed it to my cat who has stained brown teeth - alas his teeth are still brown. Not sure your theory is working.

Posted by: Adele Sykes | 9 Sep 2005 22:16:31

That reminds me - I saw some white dog poo in Iceland. Must be the first white poo I've seen since I lived in Scotland.
It must be the cold that turns it white.

Did anyone see the white dog poo on "Life on Mars" on BBC TV last Monday? It took me back to my childhood days when I used to ponder the question then.

Posted by: Pete | 18 Jan 2006 17:02:15

white dog poo is the result of feeding dogs on bones, my dog when had bones will poo white, dogs now are normaly fed on biscuit.

Posted by: mick | 30 Jan 2006 13:36:18

White dog poo makes a come back thanks to 'Life on Mars'!! So long as that awful test card transmission doesn't come back, how scary is that girl and the clown?

This site is soooo surreal, when I go to America in a few weeks I will keep a look out for white dog poo, whilst eating my bagel in the Ramada Hotel. If I find any it could be put in a paperweight and sold at the top of the Empire State Building.

Posted by: lyn | 2 Feb 2006 23:42:20

I'm so glad that the previous post has good spelling and grammar, so important in chat rooms I feel.

I hope that Lyn enjoys her bagel whilst searching for the elusive white poo.

Posted by: louise | 3 Feb 2006 19:21:53

I feel sad, yet compelled to share my theories on white dog poo with you. I felt, in my youth, that it was expelled by blind dogs, and a friend at work thought it came from small white dogs.

Posted by: Sharon | 11 Apr 2006 11:49:07

When I was a little, I used to think the colour of the dog poo denoted the colour of the dog. However as I now have a black and white dog I realise that I was incredibly thick when I was a kid

Posted by: PAUL D | 26 May 2006 17:42:38

oh my god, i have been pndering about this recently. where has the wonder of white dog poo vanished! the thought of it takes me back to my child hood days.

Posted by: jandr | 4 Jun 2006 08:18:11

How funny to stumble across this site!! I was actually trying to search for the reason behind the white dog poo!! You see I just changed my three dogs food over to dty food, and have noticed the last few days their poo is white!!! You are right though - you never see white dog poo around these days!!! Now does anyone actually know the reason for the white poo?? My dogs are black!!!!

Makes me all warm and nostalgic

Posted by: Geoff Stone | 30 Jun 2006 13:07:38

Haha - juts stumbled across this website. It's actually from an enzyme that lives in only some dog's stomach (my dad's a vet!!).
It's called mitrohydroxystethalte. Pour vinegar on it and it apparently it turns green. Gives fish and chips a new meaning.

Posted by: Richard III | 2 Sep 2006 22:37:10

I am a nurse and I have noticed old people also do white poos. It is those who worked in the munitions factory in WW2. Does anyone know the reason for this?

Posted by: Elly | 2 Sep 2006 22:42:05

In response to Geoff Stone | Jun 30, 2006 1:07:38 PM.. Geoff, Im now heading out into my Australian backyard to try an experiement. I am taking Brown vinigar and white vinegar to see the result when I pour it on a couple of white landmines in my yard left by my two dogs.. My yard contains two labrador dogs. She Being White and He Being Brown.. Maybe I can discover who is pooping in what areas?? LOLz. I will let you all know how my experiment goes shortly.
Great site by the way! Talk Soon. FOXYWHISKERS :D

I could be swayed by Mick's theory that dogs fed on bone have white poo.... the school of thought that decomposed dog log is no longer around due to modern social values does not wash.

West London, particularly the Harrow Road/Westbourne Park area is awash with dog poo, simply look away for a second and you are covered in it, yet none of it is white.

this site is shit ;)

I go with the dog diet theory and the fact that we don't get long hot summers in the UK. Shit either stays hydrated or gets washed away. Oh how i long to handle white dog shit again.

Posted by: Dan | 25 Mar 2007 14:00:03

You will no longer see white dog poo as it was a substance put into the dogs food to make it go white and crumble,i'm searvching no to find out why they dont use it anymore

Posted by: Crofty | 19 May 2007 11:55:41

I gave my dog three uncooked Tesco Organic Lamb Chop bones on Saturday.
On Sunday, there were 3 small white poos on the lawn.
I therefore summize that this was due to the bones. Not sure if the fact that they were organic or lamb or from Tescos is relevant.
I will perform some more test next weekend.

When I was young I found what I thought was a stone and drew a hopscotch grid on the pavement. After a while the smell became unbearable and I realized the stone was actually white dog poo.
I don't miss it!

This is so funny, myself and a friend were talking about white dog poo last night hence I ended up on this site!! I said to him I remember as a kid seeing a lot of it about and none nowadays like so many ppl on this site. My friend thinks it is small white dogs also that poo white. I used to think all white poo was poodle poo, but scottie dogs seemingly all poo white. I don't know this for certain so any scottie dog owners out there please let us now. Til then I'm more than curious especially as so many people on here are interested in finding an answer...I'll keep searching, if I find anything out I'll be back to let you know!!! XX

We were out walking in the countryside today and were pondering this very subject. We saw alot of big blackberry poo. i googled it (thats how i found this forum) to discover that its those bramble picking foxes. We decided that white dog poo used to be left only by the poodles who ate spangles. They seem to have disappeared into the anals of time together.Q: Why did the Baker have brown hands A: Because he kneaded a poo!

Posted by: richard | 16 Sep 2007 23:06:55

ahahahahaa
i want to put my kids in the mail and send them to daycare too!
how???

by the way, who actually eats cheesy bug sauce? white dog poo sounds great though...

There are some things mortal man was just not meant to know.

Posted by: robert | 19 Oct 2007 02:24:13

You guys must all be republicans. In the 100% factual Al Gore film, 'An Inconvenient Truth', it is PROVEN (with 14 scientific looking charts and graphs) that global warming is the reason dog poop no longer turns white. By the way, you may now purchase carbon credits for your dog so that other dogs won't make fun of him (or her).

Posted by: JohnInFlorida | 29 Oct 2007 12:28:20

so if the theory about white dog poo occuring when a dog eats bones, then where is the white tiger poo?

Posted by: nathan | 17 Dec 2007 01:39:02

I have to go with Geoff Stone. It is a combination of the digestive system and the sun/air exposure.

And everyone else is correct in saying that we don't see it much because people are much more dog poop conscious and tend to clean up better than in the past. Lots of it here in China where I work and people don't care about what gets dropped on the ground. It turns white.

Posted by: Ian | 29 Jan 2008 10:30:59

i think it was tony blair who put a stop to white dog poo

Posted by: ant | 25 Feb 2008 04:06:56

i think it is poodles that leave them.

i do wonder how blind people know their bum is clean when they finish wiping after pooping ?
